Mets And Phillies Going in Opposite Directions

After watching Jon Niese go toe-to-toe with Philadelphia's Roy Halladay, Niese was unable to close the deal and earned his fourth loss of the season.

In vintage Philly fashion, the afternoon went from a 1-0 Mets lead to a 2-1 Phillies victory thanks to a solo homer from John Mayberry and a well-executed sac fly off the bat of the hot-hitting Placido Polanco.

The Mets will try and avoid the sweep on Sunday night opposite Cliff Lee, good luck with that!

In A Loss, Mets Fans Look for Something Positive

I know it's devastating when your team climbs all the way back from a 7-0 deficit to tie the game at seven and then loses the game, 10-7. However, there were a few positives that came out of this one.

Mets hitters continue to put up crooked numbers. Their closer, Francisco Rodriguez got some work in, and again the Mets showed some resiliency by not giving up and not backing down against their NL East rival on the road, the Philadelphia Phillies.

I know what you're saying, they have to face the ultimate ace in Roy Halladay tom'row afternoon before their home opener at Citi Field on Friday. Which means they lost the series before Halladay throws the first pitch.

However, if you can show some signs of positive life which the Mets did. It does make for an easier situation when your starter, Mike Pelfrey, gets knocked out of the game in the 3rd inning without recording an out. Pelfrey surrendered 8 hits, seven runs, 6 of them earned bumping his ERA after two starts to 15.63. Sorry folks, I had to do it, I dropped Pelfrey from my fantasy baseball team.

Hopefully, Pelfrey gets his act together and/or Jon Niese one-ups Halladay on Thursday and the Mets go home happy. Either way, it's still early and anything can happen.

Pelfrey Made a Spectator By Halladay and the Phillies

Inside their clubhouse, Mets starter Mike Pelfrey could have been able to thumb through a recently-published book highlighting the Philadelphia Phillies team history with more time than he had thought earlier today. His failure to get the opposing pitcher out in the home half of the fourth inning prompted a well-placed three-run home run by Shane Victorino that made the score 6-0 and allowed Pelfrey the chance to catch up on some light reading.

Prior to this afternoon’s outing, Pelfrey was holding a 4-0 won-lost record and a consecutive scoreless streak worth 24 innings. Not to mention an ERA that would make Ron Jeremy nod his head in approval, 0.69. In search of a number two starter to take some of the heat off of their ace, Johan Santana, Pelfrey was being considered for the part. Today’s 10-0 defeat, though, could be categorized as a dress rehearsal. Pelfrey surrendered six runs and eight hits in just four innings earning him his first loss of the season.

In addition to a disappointing performance by Pelfrey, the Mets offense was lulled into just three hits by the best pitcher prospects could buy in Roy Halladay. With this defeat, the Mets are now asked to take two out of three as the series concludes tomorrow night at Citizens Bank Park.
