Pitching Bucks Trend, Mets Win

"We pitched very well tonight," Terry Collins after the Mets squeaked out a 2-1 win over the Giants last night. "That was the difference."

Jon Niese earned his eighth win of the season by allowing just one run in seven innings. Niese surrendered just three hits. He walked two and struck out five.

The bullpen led by Tim Byrdak, Jon Rauch, and Bobby Parnell held San Francisco scoreless in the eighth and ninth innings. Parnell earned his fourth save.

Parnell Seizes the Opportunity and the Mets Win

"I think I had a little extra adrenaline going. Just got to go out there and throw strikes. I was hitting my spots and throwing it where I wanted it to."

Mets reliever Bobby Parnell last night after notching his first save of the season. Parnell has taking over the closer duties for the injured Frank Francisco. The Mets have now won two in-a-row after dropping four straight.

Tonight's Intro - Mets Split Series with Padres at Home

Terry Collins will tell you that there are a lot of guys playing for jobs on this Mets team…guys like Lucas Duda

If the Mets are unable to sign Jose Reyes, you can believe Ruben Tejada is playing for a position in 2012, RIGHT NOW

Collins, will shout that he wants 25 guys next year that are willing to give him all they have for 162 nights…give him all they’ve got!

Mets closer Jason Isringhausen is looking for just one of those days so he can put the milestone of career save number 300 behind him, it is a milestone

Just give’m all you’ve got!

Collins doesn’t care where the Mets are, where they stand, for him, just come out and play the game right

Ruben Tejada, slide when you’re supposed to slide, make the play because according to your manager guys on your team are playing for their baseball lives

And one more false move is going to cost you, you got that Mr. Bobby Parnell.

Enjoy tonight's show.

Mets Who’s Hot and Who’s Not

Hot

C Josh Thole: since his call-up on June 25th, Thole is batting 12-for-24, that’s .500 with 6 runs batted in and an on-base percentage of .571…in about 27 plate appearances he has struck out three times, about 12 percent of the time, (if you’re wondering about Ike Davis, the first baseman undergoes strike three around a quarter of the time)…the most impressive statistic though is Thole’s ability to hit in the clutch…he is batting 5-for-7 with runners in scoring position, in the same situation with 2 outs, a perfect 2-for-2…the Mets front office must have noticed those numbers or else Mets fans would have seen Oliver Perez replacing the 23-year-old catcher.

RHP Bobby Parnell: since his call-up on June 30th, Parnell is holding a 1.32 ERA…in 13.2 innings pitched (41 outs), the young right-hander has 15 strikeouts to just three walks and has given up 13 hits while allowing two runners to score. Mets manager Jerry Manuel has also decided to go with Parnell as his eighth-inning guy.

Honorable Mentions: OF Angel Pagan and LHP Johan Santana

Not

C Rod Barajas: since June 1st, the veteran catcher is batting .161 (15-for-93) with just 2 RBIs and 3 extra-base hits, all doubles. Barajas does put the ball in play, however, his lack of speed lessens the chance of anything productive taking effect if an opposing infielder happens to botch a routine play…in 884 career games, Barajas has swiped just two bases in only four stolen-base attempts.

RHP Mike Pelfrey: since a nine-inning performance on June 8th against the San Diego Padres, Pelfrey’s next seven starts have seen his earned run average jump from 2.23 to 4.01…in that span, he has earned a 2-4 won-lost record in which he has surrendered 62 hits and allowed 31 runs, all earned…looking at the right-hander’s strike outs, previous to that June 8th start, Pelfrey was averaging five strike outs an outing, his last seven starts have yielded just under two strike outs a start.

Under Consideration: LF Jason Bay and LHP Pedro Feliciano
